Are you getting bombarded with unwanted robocalls? You’re not alone. With the rise of technology, illegal robocalls have become a major problem for many people. To combat this issue, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has issued a new order that requires voice service providers and gateway providers to take steps to mitigate illegal robocalls.
Under the order, several new obligations and filing deadlines will be put into effect starting this month and throughout next year. Gateway providers are now required to play a more active role in fighting illegal robocalls that originate from offshore locations. This includes applying STIR/SHAKEN caller-ID to all Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) calls carrying a U.S. number, submitting certifications and mitigation plans to the Robocall Mitigation Database (RMD), responding to traceback requests within 24 hours, blocking calls based on a reasonable do-not-originate (DNO) list, and incorporating “know your upstream provider” requirements into their mitigation plans.
Additionally, the order expands the “chain of trust” requirements for all voice service providers and intermediate providers, as they relate to gateway providers. By December 19, 2022, gateway providers must block calls based on any reasonable DNO list. By January 11, 2023, gateway providers must submit a certification and mitigation plan to the RMD, and by April 11, 2023, all providers, including intermediate providers and voice service providers, will be prohibited from accepting traffic from gateway providers not listed in the RMD.
There are several compliance deadlines associated with the FCC’s new obligations under the Gateway Provider Order. It’s important for all providers to be aware of these new requirements and to take the necessary steps to comply. The FCC’s new order will help to combat illegal robocalls and protect consumers.
